UNDERSTAND MENTAL HEALTH
WHAT IS MENTAL HEALTH
Mental health stands for a state of people’s emotional, psychological and social mental well-being.
WHAT DOES IT DETERMINE
Our mental health affects how we think, feel and act.
It enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realise their abilities and make choices, learn and work well, contribute to people’s communities, relate to others and shape the world we live in.
Mental health is therefore crucial to personal, community and socio-economic development.
WHAT AFFECTS MENTAL HEALTH
There are many factors that can contribute to both good mental health and mental health problems.
People are affected by social, economic, geopolitical and environmental circumstances. They include biological factors (genes, brain chemistry), life experiences (trauma, abuse, poverty, inequality), family history of mental health problems and environmental deprivation.
IMPORTANT AT EVERY STAGE OF LIFE
Mental health is important at every stage of a person’s life, all the way from childhood through adolescence to adulthood.
No matter someone’s life stage, prioritising mental health can support overall well-being and happiness.
